How to grow alfalfa seed sprouts

Growing your own alfalfa sprouts is simple and fun! Just follow these easy steps:

  1. Rinse: Take about 2 tablespoons of seeds and give them a quick rinse with clean water.
  2. Soak: Place the seeds in a sprouter or jar with a mesh lid and cover with water. Let them soak for about 4 hours.
  3. Drain & Rinse: Drain all the water out. Rinse the seeds and drain them again, 2-3 times daily, to keep them moist but not waterlogged.
  4. Harvest: In just 5-6 days, your fresh, crisp sprouts are ready to harvest! Enjoy them immediately or store them in the fridge.

Pro Tip: For the best results, keep your sprouter indoors away from direct sunlight.

Seed FAQ

Seeds don't expire, but their ability to sprout weakens over time. With proper storage, your seeds will remain viable for years, ensuring a high germination rate for every batch of fresh sprouts.

Key Storage Tips:

  • ✅ Keep it Cool, Dry, and Dark: The best place to store seeds is in a location that's away from heat, light, and humidity.
  • ✅ Use an Airtight Container: Jars or sealed bags are ideal. For extra protection against moisture, you can add a silica gel packet.
  • ✅ Consider Refrigeration: For long-term storage, keeping seeds in the fridge or freezer is a great option. Just be sure to let them return to room temperature before you use them.

Sprouting Seed Viability Guide

Here's how long you can expect some of our most popular seeds to last when stored correctly:

  • 1–2 Years: Mung beans, peas, lentils, and chickpeas.
  • 3–4 Years: Alfalfa, radish, fenugreek, and mustard.
  • 4–5 Years: Broccoli, wheatgrass, sunflower, buckwheat, and clover.

If you're unsure about older seeds, you can perform a simple germination test. Place a few seeds on a damp paper towel inside a sealed bag. Keep them moist and check the number of sprouts after 5–10 days to see if they are still viable.

Harder to germinate with less success/ growth than the broccoli seeds. Maybe 80% germination and no where near the size. Stated at sametime and conditions

Hi Richard, our alfalfa seeds sprout exceptionally well and have a high germination rate, typically in the 90s. I’ve personally tested them and can confidently vouch for their performance.

One thing that often causes confusion is the appearance of the seed hulls. As alfalfa seeds germinate, they shed their outer shells, which can sometimes look like ungerminated seeds. Could it be that what you’re seeing are actually hulls rather than seeds that haven’t sprouted?

Great quality seeds, I like mixing these with broccoli and daikon radish to make a sprout mix - delicious and so easy

Hi Renee, I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying our seeds! Just a quick tip, if you're looking to try something new, you might enjoy mixing alfalfa, radish, and broccoli with red clover or garlic chives. My personal favourite is a garlic chives combo! Just a heads-up: garlic chives need to be sprouted on their own for about 3 days first, then you mix them in with the sprouting alfalfa or whatever you're combining with, and continue to grow for another 4-5 days or until alfalfa is ready.

The alfalfa sprouts germinate well and grow quickly, which is great because we eat a lot of them!
